Construction Issues in Houston Market

Pete Peltier

Some of the issues that concern contractors are in the area of timely payment. Specifically with regard to change order approvals and job finalization. We are also concerned with product and submittal standardization by means of reviewing and updating specifications.

The ending of the Greater Houston Wastewater Program reminds us that the construction market is constantly changing and we as contractors must remain flexible to respond to the market.

Another important issue is the bidding process. We must adhere to the bidding rules, taking no exception, to insure that the process is fair to all who participate.

Our industry needs to do more to interest young people in choosing careers in the field of construction as craftsmen, operators, mechanics and field supervisors, as well as estimators and project managers.

The Houston area is a great place to be in the construction business and we are all trying to make it even better.
